I think that has a lot to do with the factors you’ve mentioned, David. Rebecca Ford: I agree that the early reactions seem extremely positive. (Stop me if I’m going too far!) Rebecca, what are your reads on the movie’s prospects overall, and which stars should start hitting the campaign trail? Faist was a highlight for me too, but I thought the women stole the show and are most competitive for Oscar nominations-maybe, even wins. Not every shake-up in this reimagining works, but that much of it does as well as it does is a testament to Spielberg’s confident direction, Tony Kushner’s savvy screenplay, and most of all, that cast. It sounds like the screening Rebecca and I attended was a little less ecstatic, but all murmurs outside the theater on the Fox lot were pretty effusive.

At least for me, the surprise factor was a huge plus watching this West Side Story-all told, I was pretty knocked out by it for exactly the reasons you mentioned, Katey: a true crowd-pleaser, faithfully and rousingly adapting a classic by giving it the scale of a modern blockbuster. Word around the film was so quiet, in fact, that it was hard to know what to expect beyond those core, iconic songs.
David Canfield: I think it might! My expectations going into Monday night’s screening were fairly low all things considered-not that I expected a total miss, but the Oscar juggernaut that the original was seemed like a stretch since we’d heard so little.
